For the inspection and detection of corona discharge and arcing on overhead transmission lines and in substations, FlyCom uses today's most advanced and sensitive daytime UV-inspection camera. The daytime capability makes corona inspection a low-cost procedure, without the need for nighttime inspections. Integrated into FlyCom's specially adapted helicopter, UV- inspection camera allows for full airborne inspections of all overhead transmission lines and substations. The UV technology complements the IR technology also offered by FlyCom. Whereas the IR technology is ideal for detecting defects and finding high resistance connections on power transmission lines. UV detection can locate other problematic conditions such as shorted insulator bells, defective polymer insulators, contamination, or even improperly installed components. Finding defective components is now possible in the early stages of degradation and, with UV technology, there is no need for line loading, since UV inspection is completely voltage dependent. FlyCom's specially modified helicopter with its 5-axis stabilising systems ensures a vibration free and steady recording environments. In addition to the corona detection feature, our system also documents the flight route on digital videotape. A high-resolution digital still camera with a high tech zoom enables close-up inspection of mechanical components and easy assessment of detected corona problems. Our system captures the complete flight route, both on digital videotape an on our Corona inspection camera. The videotape is annotated with exact GPS co-ordinates to enable our clients to localise positions of faults immediately. Our clients receive a detailed and comprehensive report logging errors found on the inspected lines.
